In this particularly white winter, I find myself longing for something green and lush. While Puerto Rico is out of the question, this whole cloth quilt made form Queen Streets "Maddie" and "Dolin" in jade and aqua is just what the doctor ordered.
"Dolin" is a whispy green and blue floral on a white background, and "Maddie" is decidedly greener on the other side- and more mod.
This quilt followed by a regimen of wheat grass shots should get me through to Ground Hogs Day. Or maybe a Mojito?

I promised my friend, '70's and '80's super model Nancy Donahue, that I would make her a quilt back in March 2010. It took me way too long! However- i was aiming for a perfect interpretation of her infectious laughter, sunny disposition, resemblance to Doris Day, and faithful friendship.
This quilt, made from 2 packs of "jellyroll" strips from Kate Spains "Verna" (moda) line, holds hands a sunny, butter yellow print from Jennifer Paganellis Sis Boom "Poodle" line. Quite fitting, since these fabric designers are good buddies, too!
The jellyroll pieces were "braided" together- Hence, the "Friendship Braid Quilt". It is an over sized queen, which was a bear to quilt- but with lots of trimming and measuring i was able to square it up. This often happens when quilting long, narrow strips together. The pretty daisy quilting is a nod to Doris Days, "Please don't eat the daisies!" song. I hope she likes it as much as I liked making it for her. She's the one on the left.

Thank you. Thank you, Tammy Gilley for coming up with this great concept. Thank you to everyone who participated in this wonderful collaborative project. Thank you for waiting patiently for me to finish my end of it. Thank you to Jennifer Paganelli for providing the backing and for creating all of the beautiful scraps that made up these 30 squares. Thank you to the girls at Make and Mingle for inviting us to use their space to hold our "bee".
This quilt will be raffled off for $5./ticket or 5 tickets for $20.00. If you would like to be a part of the raffle, leave a comment and I will send you the ticket. You can send me a check, or pay via Paypal. It will be on display at Witchypoo in Wilton, Ct from today, Sunday May 30th-Tuesday June 1st. It will then be at Make and Mingle until a winner will be chosen Friday June 11th. It is 74''x 90", 100 % organic cotton batting, with a candy striped backing. The money will go to Marilyn W. Dugan Foundation, Inc. who has done a lot of work to raise funds and bring supplies to Port au Prince.
There were enough quilt squares to make 2 quilts, the 2nd one- hopefully done by June 1st, will be going to Haiti with Tammy's people sometime in the month of June.
I have to say, I can't wait to collaborate on another quilt like this. It really was a joyful experience. Next time, we'll make it a pot luck! It's going to be hard to let go, especially for Ollie, but I know it will go to a good home.

Thanks to the amazing work done by Rebecca from Haiti By Hand, Tammy of Tammy Gilley Studios, and The Quilt Haiti project a few of the quilts I have made for Jennifer Paganelli and her fabric line (Sis Boom) have made it to Haiti already! The collaborative quilt we did at Make and Mingle should be done soon... promises promises.... I swear!
I think that this may be one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. Being thousand of miles away I feel so helpless. It's nice to know we could provide some comfort.
Thank you to Jennifer for creating such joyful fabrics, sure to brighten anyones day- just look at that woman's smile!

Custom quilt for sorority sisters.

This quilt was commissioned by a sorority, AST, Alpha Sigma Tau.
The mother of on of the girls had just passed away from breast cancer a month ago, and they wanted to let her know she would always be surrounded by her sisters.
Each girl chose a fabric from the Sis Boom fabric line and their name was then printed on muslin and framed within the fabric square. At the center, a special square in remembrance of the mother. The quilting pattern was ribbons, like the pink ribbons that symbolize the fight for a cure for cancer.
This project was a labor of love and I think a great way to show you care.

It's out! Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective) by C&T Publishing's Design Collective is now available. It features my custom quilt design that I made for Cortney and Bob Novogratz and their most recent "9 by Design"
addition, Major.
The book, "Little Birds", includes all of the instructions and templates you need to make this colorful, mid-century modern inspired baby quilt. The other 25 projects are just as adorable and this new division of C&T Publishing is really giving quilting and sewing the new spin it deserves. Other great artists, like Bari Ackerman, have had a lot of fun putting these projects together. Now it's your turn.
Last nights episode of "9 by Design" told the story of a little school friend of the Novogratz family, Jasmina Anema, who suffered from leukemia. The Novogratz clan and other school families put on a great fundraiser to help Jasmina and her mom with medical bills. Jasima was a warrior, but she succumbed to the disease in January.
For anyone who orders a book from me during the month of May, 100% of my profit will go to The ONEFORJASMINA Foundation.

My friend Lisa ran into my husband in Keough's hardware store, they are the best and have an incredible stock of baking forms, cookie cutters, etc... although Tim goes for more manly items. We had been out of touch and Lisa asked what I have been up to. When he mentioned the word "quilt" she said she had been looking high and low for a special baby quilt that wasn't too expensive. Enter- Go Make Your Bed! I had about a day to accomplish this feat, luckily I had this great retro cheater quilt from Dena Designs and some super soft cowboy flannel for the back. Of course, organic batting, which goes without saying-there I said it anyway!
I wanted to photograph it before she came to pick it up, and I had an idea. She mention the baby's grandpa was Jim Henson's right hand man and actually helped create Snuffleupagus. I have often thought Tys, my Friesian, was a cross between Magilla Gorilla and Snuffleupagus, so he said he was will ing to model it for me. I hope the baby, George, spends hours of joy rolling around on it.... Like Ollie did! Don't worry, I totally de-furred it before bagging it up!
Whole cloth baby quilts run $50- $100.00 depending on the fabric used and size. This one was 42"x 42" and was $75,00, as it was a custom RUSH order. Vintage fabrics cost more too, and patchwork quilts start at $75.00 for a 40"x40" when in stock. I'm flexible, prolific, and I look forward to filling orders. Please feel free to give as much input as you like!

We were so fortunate to be invited by Bob and Cortney Novogratz to the premier party for Bravo's new series "9 by Design" at The Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo. The show features the dynamic design duo and their tribe of seven amazing kids. I have to say, their taste is impeccable and unexpected, but what really had my head spinning was the amount of energy they both have! Particularly Coutney, who in fact went into labor by the end of the show. Tune in next week for the delivery and more insipiring design (and parenting) skills. Bob is tall, dark, handsome and hilarious. Cortney has movie star looks, but is truly down to earth. I want to be jealous of her, but she's too darn likable...
Tim knows the family better than I do, as he has photographed them (this pic of them all in bed was their Christmas card for 2009). I think that having seven kids helps to keep them grounded. Kids have a way of doing that, no?
Play the "design your dream room" game with Bob and Courtney. Maybe you'll come up with some ideas on how to "Go Make Your Bed!"

Jan Eleni. When I first came to know her she had an amazing shop, a tiny space on East 9th Street in NY's Greenwich village. Chock a block full of European antiques and object de arts, it was often frequented by the fabulous and fashionable. I always new she would take NYC by storm, and always thought she had star quality... But when you are featured on Decor 8's blog- your life will change forever! It's so nice when people who have worked so hard are at last rewarded with the acknowledgement they deserve. Congratulations ,Jan... I am in the throws of getting ready for my new Go Make Your Bed website. The blog is still around, but has been laying dormant over the winter months. I have been so busy at Dark horse Farm Designs with my crafting and getting the Open Sky shop up and running, poor little GMYB took the back seat for a while.
I am creating a ready made line, and also a design wall where you can go to choose the fabrics of your liking. Everything to Go Make Your Bed! Everything you need to know about ordering will be clearly explained on the site, and a FAQ page. But rest assured, I am always just a phone call or email away if you have any questions or need suggestions. In fact, I prefer to speak directly about the order before I start cutting.
The quilts pictured are all made with the new Sis Boom line, So St. Croix, and I will keep posting pictures as the come off of my sewing table. The whole collection will be very varied, so be sure to check back and see what's new.
Also, I will quilt with your fabric for a fee if you get it to me.

While visiting my daughter, Genevieve, in London last fall, I was inspired by the colorful flats along Portobello Rd. More than a year has past since then and I have finally made up a quilt to capture the quaintness of that street! The quilt, "Genevieve goes to London", is 40''x 55'', is a series of 3 1/2'' strips and blocks. I used bamboo batting and I did free motion quilting to try to recreate the masonry and cobblestone roads. You can see Genevieve in the windows. My cat, Ollie likes the back almost as well as the front, and so do I. This quilt will be raffled off (details to come) as a promotion for the new C&T Publishing book, "Little Birds", in which I have a quilt pattern featured.
More good e-news, this blog will soon be a proper website where you can order ready made and custom quilts. It should be up and running by mid-March.

Tina Givens lends her graceful hand to all of her beautiful painterly fabric designs. I love this combination of colors and the subject matter couldn't be more timely. Naked branches with saffron colored leaves, and pomegranates, both in season right now. The alternate side is lighter and brighter, with lovely scrolling strokes of turquoise.
Soon, I will have a design wall up featuring my favorite Free Spirit fabric designers, including Tina,Jennifer, Heather and Denyse. Let me know who else you think I should include in my palette! This will make the choosing of fabrics less overwhelming.

Okay, class. It's naptime. Ahhh, the nap. Imagine someone actually demanding that you cuddle up mid afternoon and close your eyes. Perhaps even nod off into slumberland for a few precious moments. This kindergarten memory has inspired a series of sleeping bags, nap rolls, "nap" sacks if you will. Perhaps not quite tent worthy in cooler weather, but certainly just right for a dimly lit classroom, living room floor, dining room table fort- you know, the kind with a few sheets thrown over the top...

This Napping Sack is made with all of Heather Bailey's fabric, and hence her name is Heather. I will do a few more as soon as I have a minute, the next will be "Jennifer"- for her namesake, Jennifer Paganelli.

I am honored to have it as part of their collection of amazing decorative items in any one of their incredible abodes. You must check out their website and also, BRAVO networks reality show featuring this tribe unto itself. They are super talented, handsome and gorgeous, amusing, giving and sweet. I know, I wanted to hate them, too, but they are just too marvelous. They do wonderful things for people who have, and for those who have not. Courtney was instrumental in finding a bone marrow match for her daughters classmate. What I really want is some of that Novogratz energy! Can't wait to tune in...Bravo, January 2010.

Another burst of Sis Boom bloom. This time for my niece Rebecca's little girl, Lucy. My sister, Amy, calls her a "wood sprite" so I decided to applique a few butterflies on the pillows to add a bit of fancy. You can't see it in the photos, but the quilting pattern is a big butterfly meander.

Thanks to my Wilton Cake mold I was able to creat a magical Dutch soccer ball cake for our friend, Dutch Clown/ Hair Dresser to the stars... (REALLY!!!) Ronnie Stam. His gorgeous Greek Goddess wife, Jan Eleni, did an amazing job cooking and decorating their fab Ft. Greene floor- thru, complete with Alice in Wonderland garden. Maybe our magical manure played a part in that??? You may remember pics of it from an earlier post, "A garden grows in Brooklyn."By the way never under estimate the power of Magic Candles... it was hilariuos!

Big Twin Quilt Raffle!

This is a big one, but I feel I owe it to all of my super sweet supporters, fabulous followers, and quilters and crafters in blog land. Because it is a big one, it will be up until July 16th. What's at stake here? A lovely twin quilt, in peachy hues. A combination of Heather Bailey and Heather Ross, married to Valorie Wells, Amy Butler, and a few others. The pattern is one I developed for Sis Booms 7 color ways of Flower Power Michel,( It can be seen below on the post "An Invitation for you" hanging on the wall behind George the Labradoodle) and re-did it when I was trying to make a pattern that others could use.

This picture of me wrapped up in vintage quilts was taken in 1980 for British Vogue by the incomparable Bruce Weber. The more recent picture, was taken by my husband Tim Geaney, who was Bruce's assistant way back in 1980, an amazing photographer in his own right. It was working for Bruce when I started loving and collecting quilts, and now, I am making my own, and helping others "go make their beds".

I had to laugh out loud when I caught Jennifer Paganelli's sister, Meghan, in this pose- texting her fabric choices to a friend back home in Atlanta. It is so much like my little girl texting on this site, it just confirmed to me how spot on this idea is! Meghan finally chose a blue and green ensemble for her bedroom back home inspired by her collection of Virgin Mary art that she has collected from around the world.

While her image changes from continent to continent, The Virgin is almost always wearing a blue garment. The green accents will pull in the green fire place mantle also in her room. I cannot wait to get the pictures when it is done!

Well , the wonderfully generous and creative Jennifer Paganelli has done it again. She is giving me a spot at her Sis Boom Spring Sale 6/11-6/13. My husband Tim Geaney came over to take some pics before the masses come and take everything! The place looks amazing. We have a lovely little corner set up with a bed and some samples to look at, and her swatches of new fabric all over the sale, so come and pick and choose! Too many to choose from! I have all of Jennifer Paganelli's Sis Boom available, and just go to the Free Spirit Westminster Fibers website to get really overwhelmed. It's just so great to have so many choices. The face of quilting is really changing...more modern, more variety, more color! I am getting ready to go to Quilt Market with Mrs. P (that's what my son calls Jennifer) in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday. I'll take lot's of pictures. Here we are at a local shop in Westport, CT opening where we have our things for sale. Isn't she lovely! Such a great friend... I'm so lucky.

This is a custom twin quilt and pillow cases with a lobster buoy theme, for a customer in Cundy's Harbour, Maine. Raw selvage edges and imprints of nautical rope give it a more 3 dimensional look.

Witchy Poo Cares!

Lovely Marie, owner of "Witchy Poo"- a delightful accessories shop here in Wilton, CT threw a festive fundraiser for "Wilton Cares", an organization to help local families in need. People brought non perishable food items and household products to deposit into the food bank. Local businesses- Dinas, Soup Alley, Zeytinias and Stefanos among others ( forgive me if I left anyone out) donated the food and wine. Jennifer Paganelli donated fabric and I whipped up a "Dorm on a Drawstring"- twin quilt, pillowcase, lavender sachet, and laundry bag/pillow case- which was raffled off later in the evening along with a really cute folk art chicken pillow-

can't remember the name of that generous soul... anyway- it was a lovely evening and it is nice to see that Wilton does care!

Mid- Century Spring...

This was FUN! I'm always amazed at how the birds have total faith in the coming of spring. Not a leaf on a tree, dark gloomy days, rain, rain, and more rain and sleet! They start building there nests in earnest, while the rest of us moan and groan- longing for forsythia and lilacs. Well, they were right again. Spring has sprung, the trees are budding out, the forsythia is practically on it's way out, and my quilt is finished. Just in time for the new born birdies... and don't forget to put out your thread snips and little fabric bits. The birds love to decorate there nests, too, and it's magic when you see a bit of some quilt you worked on in the nest along with the mud and twigs. Quilters have been doing this for years. I promise to take a picture, next time I find one.

Though I may have started my career as a fashion model, my sense of style is more directed to the comforts of home. I love colors, and texture, and one of my passions is quilting. I have been so inspired by my new custom bedding line idea- especially the "Dorm On A Drawstring"- I feel like a kid again! I've been in touch with a lot of my friends who now have kids going off to camp, boarding school or college, and they all want to send them off with the comforts of home. The way it works is, you choose the fabrics- mix and match- the more the better- quilts and duvet covers, pillow cases and shams. Ruffles, or not- kind of a "Project Runway" meets "Top Design"- YOUR design! And, Voila! Bravo!
